Day 2 - Transportation, Erratic but Dependable

I am growing used to using public transportation in Spain. The combination of metro, buses, trains, and taxi networks allow for easy travel without a car. I am used to driving everywhere in the US. Some cities like Ann Arbor have limited public transportation, but I find myself rarely using them due to car travel still being more convenient. In Spain the public transportation is so developed it actually beats driving if you can travel relatively light. I am impressed how much movement there is in the cities and I haven't seen one traffic jam, something that has become the norm at peak hours in the US.

At first glance the public transportation network in Spain seems erratic, but once one gets used to the networks they begin to feel dependable. Traveling here makes me hope that Michigan goes through with building the Ann Arbor-Detroit Regional Rail. It's a difficult decision and there is a fight against it due to taxes and arguing it won't be used to its full potential. However, we need to start somewhere and I believe after a few years the new rail system would be used commonly, if only at first to avoid highway traffic. Once we realize its potential, we can more easily justify building new connections from it until the entire state of Michigan has a public transport system that could one day rival that of Spain. It is a dream that I hope slowly finds its way to reality.
